Lesson

‘Illaaa  ‘azaa – (save a trifling hurt) it means that the Jews will either abuse, or reproach with their tongues or will cause any other trifling hurt. They cannot harm you more than it.

God Almighty addresses the People of the Scripture in this verse: It had been better for you, If you would have believed, in this way you also could be included in the khayral  ‘ummam  (the best of the nations). Your respect would have been increased in the world and you would get rewards in the Hereafter.

But Alas! None of them accepted Islam save a few persons {for example Abdullah bin Salaam or Negus (the Emperor of Abyssinia) etc}. In spite of becoming the truth obvious, they stuck disobedience.

Maximum people of them are disobedient. Allah Almighty says, “O Muslims! You must not be afraid due to observing either their more number of people or materially arms and equipment”. It is the promise by God Almighty that these disobedient will not be able to harm you on the condition that you prove yourselves as the best nation in the true spirit. These people, at most; can just abuse you with tongue, or use bad words for you or cause trifling hurt. Neither can they overcome you, nor can cause you any big trouble. Be sure that if they would come before you to fight, they would turn away and flee, and they will not get any help from any side. They will be disgraced after defeat.

This foretelling of Holy Qur’aan was fulfilled exactly. In the times of the Companions (may God be pleased with them) of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him), the end of the People of the Scripture was like this. They congregated and tried hard for destruction of Islam and Muslims but could not harm. Wherever they faced the Muslims, ran away after being defeated. And at every occasion, Allah Almighty helped the Muslims.
