Commentary

That lesson has been manifested in this verse which Muslims should learn from previous incidents,. When Messenger of God Almighty (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) instructed the Muslims to be prepared for the Battle of Tabuuk, then a commotion was to arise.

True Muslims, who were ready every time to sacrifice their lives on the Messenger (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam), got ready immediately according to custom without wrangling and they presented their wealth according to their means. But some of them were those who began to think.

On this side was commandment of the Messenger of Allah Almighty (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam), and on the other side, there was extreme suffering and pain. Ultimately, their Belief compelled them that, while the Messenger (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) has been bearing entire hardships, then we have no right to remain behind. And they joined being ashamed on weakness of their hearts. None was remained behind at home save those three persons; story of whom was mentioned in the previous lesson, and they punished themselves. Now there was a group of weak and insolent people who remained behind.

Besides them, there was another group of Hypocrites, which remained behind. First group was excusable, but the second – deserved severe punishment in the world as well as on the Day of Judgment. It has been described in this verse about those people who are imitation-able and who can be a pattern for others.

It is commanded that the Believers should be careful for their duty to God Almighty and fear God’s anger and wrath, and join the party of those people who chose sincerity and truth. These are the people who deserved honors and awards due to their good attributes. And those people who erred; were forgiven on the ground of their good-will and truth.

In the second verse, it is commanded that it does never set off to the people of Madinah and those who live in its surroundings that they should sit at home comfortable while the Messenger (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) would have been suffering from heat, hunger and thirst in the Way of Allah Almighty. It is incumbent that they should sacrifice their lives on the Life of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him).

Commentary

It has been described in this verse that those three persons are also included in the Mercy of Allah Almighty whose decision was deferred. And during the period of deferment, the Muslims were commanded that they should break off their all connections entirely from them. These three individuals are Ka’b bin MalikHilal bin Umayyah and Maraarah bin Ar’Rabii’. These people were true Muslims and rich also. But thinking that “we shall move today or tomorrow” they could not join the Army and remained behind at home.

After returning of the Army from the Battle of Tabuuk, these three people spoke the truth before the Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) and accepted their failure. The decision about them was deferred.

In this verse, about them, it has been explained that besides the confusion of waiting, they suffered from the calamity of “breaking off all connections” for many days, until this verse was revealed. At last, they were forgiven also; because intention of any of them was not false. They were true Believers, pure from infidelity and hypocrisy.

It is commanded that their error has been forgiven whose decision was postponed. The people had abandoned with them talking and meeting, even every relationship, according to the commandment of God’s Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him). When they used to come unto the Messenger, He (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) used to turn from them. Nobody used to talk to them, and everyone used to desert them. Even that; their living had become very difficult. They were greatly worried and used to bewail that “Our Lord! There is no abode for us save You”.

Even that, the Christian King of Ghassaan wrote a letter to Ka’b bin Malik (May Allah be pleased with him) and wished to seduce him in these words, “Why are you suffering there? Come on to us and live comfortably”. But he was a true Muslim, did not listen to anyone, and used to pray before Allah Almighty imploring earnestly and humbly for forgiveness of his mistake. At last, Allah Almighty had pity and He sent down for them too glad tidings of forgiveness.

Retaliation of sacrifice - Quran Chapter 9 – 117 (Pt-11, Stg-2) (L-1255) - درس قرآن

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

117.  Allah hath turned in mercy to the Prophet, and to the Muhaajiriin and the Ansaar who followed him in the hour of hardship, after the hearts of a party of them had almost swerved aside, then turned He unto them in mercy. Lo! He is Full of Pity, Merciful for them-
117.  Laqattaa-bAllaahu  ‘alan-Nabiyyi  wal-Muhaa-jiriina  wal-‘Ansaaril-lazii-nattaba-‘uuhu  fii  saa-‘atil-‘usrati  mim-  ba’-di  maa  kaada  yaziigu  quluubu  farii-qim-minhum  summa  taaba  ‘alay-him.  ‘InnaHuu  bihim  Ra-‘uufur-  Rahiim.

Commentary

Saa-‘atil-‘usrati – (the hour of hardship), the word “Saa-‘ah” is used for a little time i.e. an hour. Here it aims “the time”. ‘Usrah means “difficult, hard, severe”. The aim from Saa-‘atil-‘usrati  is the time of preparation for the Battle of Tabuuk. At that time; there were difficulties, distresses and extreme sufferings all around.

The Army of the Muslims, which got ready at such time, is also called “Jayshil-‘usrah”. The difficulties which were in front; have been mentioned as under:

1.  The people were tired, because they had returned from a Battle recently.

2.  The weather was very severe hot.

3.  It was season of gathering crops of the dates. At such times, owners of the gardens must be present.

4.  The distance of journey was very long.

5.  The war was against a very powerful enemy.

6.  The Muslim Army was facing deficiency of food and war equipment. One date was provided to two soldiers per day for food. At the end, many soldiers used to suck one date, turn by turn, and then drink water.

7.  Riding (conveyance) was not attainable. Ten soldiers used to ride on one camel turn by turn.

In such circumstances, it was not possible for everyone to remain steadfast. Which spirit and steadiness was proved by the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him), Muhaajiriin and Ansaar {those who quitted their native land (Makkah) and their helpers/friends in Madinah}, that is an instance of its own. Any example of such selflessness and faithfulness cannot be found anywhere in the world.

It is commanded in the verse that the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) and His true faithful Companions (May Allah be pleased with them) remained steady and showed such spirit in such hour of hardship, due to which Mercy of God Almighty took them in Its Bosom.

The entire Muslims moved to suffer from hardships and endure labors along with the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him). Only a few persons remained behind without any excuse, narration about whom will be discussed later on.

Those all people were entitled by Allah Almighty to get His favors and honors. And those people who joined them after evasion, they were also forgiven. Allah Almighty is Merciful and Kind on the Muslims. Those deserve His Mercy; who help in hardship.

Commentary

It was narrated in the previous verse that some Muslims used to pray from Allah Almighty for forgiveness of their idolater parents and relatives. They were prevented from it by saying that “the forgiveness is only for them who believe in Allah Almighty, and are ready to sacrifice their lives and wealth for obedience of His commandment”.

The idolaters do not believe in Allah Almighty. Therefore, they can never be forgiven. After the revelation of that verse, some Muslims thought, “would those people be punished who prayed for forgiveness of the idolaters before the revelation of that verse? They have been replied particularly in this verse.

It is commanded that only those people will be punished who went astray. And near Allah Almighty, astray are such people who disobey any commandment after its revelation. That person will not be called to account who prayed for forgiveness of idolaters before the revelation of the commandment.

Its formula and established order is that those people who believed and began to follow the teachings of Islam, they will be considered astray at such time when clear commandment has been revealed that in future they should not commit such and such work, but even then; one disobeys intentionally.

Therefore, those people who prayed for forgiveness of idolaters before the revelation of this verse, they will not be called to account due to this act. They will be called to account; who will do so after prevention.

The Sovereign and God of the heavens and the earth is One, Allah Almighty. Everything of the universe is under His Command and Jurisdiction. Whosoever will disobey His commandment, none is able to save him from His wrath and punishment.

Understand it thoroughly that there is no protecting friend of you instead of Allah Almighty nor any helper. Therefore, you should stand up tying your hands before Him. He only will be Merciful on the obedient, and will punish to the disobedient.
