Commentary

Ta’-dil – (offering compensation), this word is from ‘Adl, which means “equality” as per Arabic language. That thing can be compensation of any other thing, which is equal to the other. Therefore, here it aims ‘compensation’.

Sharaabun – (a drink), in Arabic, every drinkable thing is called sharaab, as every eatable thing is called ta-‘aam. There are some other words for the forbidden liquor (sharaab) like ‘Khumar’ etc. in Arabic language.

Hamiim – (boiling), this word has been derived from hamam. Two more famous words are in use from the same origin:

1.   Hamaam – The bath-room, where hot water is available and the hamaam is also kept hot.

2.   Hummaa – it means ‘Fever’.

It is appendix of previous verse. It was described in the first part of this verse (previous lesson) that they will not find any protector or intercessor on the Day of Resurrection except Allah Almighty. Now it is being explained that if they will offer, even every compensation, which they will have, to get rid of that Day’s calamity, it will not be possible. Entire remunerations of the whole world will be useless there. Suppose! They have the entire world and by offering it, they want to be saved, even then they will not be able to escape. Only good works and belief of this life will be useful There. There will be no source of their deliverance while their own deeds would be cause of their seizure.

It is commanded that even the biggest compensation will not be accepted before Allah Almighty. On the Doomsday, the condition of such people will be that, ill-luck of their evil deeds would have surrounded them from all around and they would be standing as prisoners in the Court of Allah Almighty like criminals to be punished. Their wicked acts will become handcuffs and fetters, and those will tie their hands and feet.

They would have drunk big glasses of cold water in the world. They would not have talked except the bottles pressed in the ice. They would have remained sitting and sleeping in the soft chairs and quilted bedding comfortably. But there, their disbelief only will be kept in front. Worldly pomp, property and dignity will not be useful There, no concession whether they were honored and well off people of the world. For drinking, boiling water will be given to them, and they will suffer from a painful doom of body and soul of every sort, and that will be only because they disbelieved in Allah Almighty and turned away from His Commands in the world.
