Dream’s Explanation

Surah Yuusuf (Joseph) - 12

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

46.  (And when he came to Joseph in the prison, he exclaimed): Joseph! O thou truthful one! Expound for us the seven fat cows being devoured by seven lean cows and the seven green ears of corn and other (seven) dry, that I may return unto the people, so that they may know.

47.  He said: Ye shall sow seven years as usual, but that which ye reap, leave it in the ear, all save a little which ye eat.

48.  Then after that will come seven hard years which will devour all that ye have prepared for them, save a little of that which ye have stored.

49.  Then, after that, will come a year when the people will have plenteous crops and when they will press (wine and oil).
46.  Yuusufu  ‘ayyu-has-Siddiqu  ‘aftinaa  fii  sab-‘i  baqa-raatin  simaa-niny-ya’-kulu-hunna  sab-‘un  ‘ijaafunw-wa  sab-‘i  sumbu-laatin  khuzrinw-wa  ‘ukhara  yaa-bisaatil-la-‘alliii  ‘arji-‘u  ‘ilan-naasi  la-‘allahum  ya’-lamuun.

Commentary

Tuh-sinuun – (you will store) its origin is ‘ihsaan, which has been derived from the word hisnHisn means “Fort”. ‘Ihsaan means “to store in the fortress, to keep saved”.

Yugaasu – (it will be rained), origin of this word is ‘agaasatun, which has come out from the word gaysaGaysa means “rain”. ‘Agaasah means “to rain”.

The courier came to prison and visited Joseph (peace be upon him). He described Him (peace be upon him) the dream of the King and asked for its actual interpretation, so that the King may obtain deliverance from his confusion.

Joseph (peace be upon him) said: Seven fat cows and seven green ears of corn are signs of prosperity for seven years. But seven lean cows and seven dry ears of corn are signs of seven dry years. It meant that after seven years from now, severe famine will occur for seven years, in which the entire acquired grain will be finished save a little quantity for sowing.

He (peace be upon him) described interpretation of the dream as well as explained about suitable remedial measures against the famine too, that from the production of seven years, they should use the quantity of the grain which is necessary, but remaining entire corn should be kept in its ears so that, it may be saved from the insects etc. and used during the period of famine. After the seven dry years, the prosperity will come again.
