Quran Chapter 9 – 37 (Pt-10, Stg-2) (L-1182) - درس قرآن

Disobedience of the Command

Chapter Tawbah (Repentance) – Surah – 9)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in Allaah from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

37.  Postponement (of a sacred month) is only an excess of disbelief whereby those who disbelieve are misled; they allow it one year and forbid it (another) year, that they may make up the number of the months which Allah hath hollowed, so that they allow that which Allah hath forbidden. The evil of their deeds is made fair-seeming unto them. And Allah guideth not the disbelieving folk.
37.  ‘Inna-mannasiii-‘u  ziyaadatun-  fil-kufri  yu-zallu  bihillaziina  kafaruu  yuhilluu-nahuu  ‘aamanw-wa  yuharri-muuna-huu  ‘aamal-li-yuwaati-‘uu  ‘id-data  maa  harra-mAllaahu  fa-yuhilluu  maa  harramAllaah..  Zuy-yina  lahum  suuu-‘u  ‘a’-maalihim.  WAllaahu  laa  yahdil-  qawmal-Kaafiriin.

Commentary

Nasiii-‘un – it is an origin, which means “to postpone, to recapture anything from its place”. Here; it aims, that tradition, which was introduced by the influential chieftains of the Arab before Islam. That is to say; they used to replace the forbidden month behind to the allowed month. For example, the month of Muharram is a forbidden month, they used to change it at the place of the next month i.e. Saffar, and used to say: in this year, the month of Saffar will be considered as forbidden month instead of Muharram, and the month of Muharram will be considered as “allowed”.

Yuwaati-‘uu – {(they) make up}, this word is from mu-waati-‘atun, which has been derived from wat-‘un. Wat-‘un means “to make easy, to mollify”. Mu-waati-‘atun means “ to make a thing corresponding to the other”. Here; it aims “God Almighty had determined four months of a year “as forbidden”. They kept their counting the same i.e. four months. But whenever they wished, they used to replace them with one another, keeping the counting of four forbidden months equal.

In the verse before this, God’s appointed number of months was described. There were four such months among the twelve, in which war, fighting or quarrel was particularly forbidden. Those were called Haraam months i.e. Rajab, Zi-qa’d, Dhul-Hajjah and Muharram.

Sometimes, any great leader used to order: Fighting is allowed in this year during the month of Muharram. In exchange, the month of Saffar will be forbidden. Like this, forbidden months were changed from their routine by the command of the chieftains. It meant that the idolaters fixed the command of their leaders obligatory; instead of the command of God Almighty. It is commanded in this verse: Changing the months from their routine is only an excess; produced by the infidels and it is disobedience of the Commands of Allah Almighty.
