Request by brothers of Joseph

Surah Yuusuf (Joseph) - 12

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

88.  And when they came (again) before him (Joseph) they said: O ruler! Misfortune hath touched us and our folk, and we bring but poor merchandise, so fill for us the measure and be charitable unto us. Lo! Allah will requite the charitable.
88.  Falammaa  dakhaluu  ‘alay-hi  qaaluu  yaaa-‘ayyuhal-‘Aziizu  massanaa  wa  ‘ahlanaz-zur-ru  wa  ji’-naa  bi-bizaa-‘atim-muz-jaatin  fa-‘awfi  lanal-kayla  wa  tasaddaq  ‘alaynaa.  ‘InnAllaaha  yajzil-Muta-saddiqiin.

Commentary

‘Az-zur-ru – (misfortune, severity), this word has passed earlier. Zurrun is used for every kind of misfortune and evil. Here it aims “poverty, want, indigence”.

Muz-jaatin – (worthless, less than the requirement and poor). It has been derived from the word ‘az-jaa’, which means “carrying forward slowly”. Muz-jaatin means “the thing which is not able to go forth itself, but it is driven by effort” as defective coins, worthless merchandise, broken furniture etc.

Tasaddaqun – (be charitable), it is a word of command, origin of which is sadaqah. It means “to sacrifice for the welfare of others”.

Brothers of Joseph (peace be upon him) reached Egypt again in distressed condition and described to the ruler of Egypt (Joseph) about their un-fortune circumstances that “the time of fasting from necessity is going to surround us and the members of our family very soon. We have nothing to pay the price of the provisions. However we have brought some poor merchandise. Kindly set the price aside and give us the measure of the same quantity which you give usually. We are in such condition at this time that you may give us the grain as Alms and Charity. Allah Almighty is the Merciful and the Gracious. He gives more from Himself to those who feel pity upon others.
