Commentary
If Joseph (peace be
upon him) were irascible like His brothers, He would have beaten them
unmannerly. At that time, He (peace be upon him) was performing as a ruler and
was able to get them punished in accordance with own will. But His foresight
and patience worked here also as usual. Beholding this, His brothers began to
flatter and said: in fact; his (Binyamin’s) father is very aged and
weak. So kindly! Take any one of us instead of him and let him go.
Prophet Joseph (peace be
upon him) said: Allah Almighty protect Me from such injustice. How can I arrest
lawfully any other than he, from whom the stolen property has been recovered?
If I did so, I would be counted in wrongdoers, and breaking of law would be
written in My name.
