Surah Huud (Hud) - 11

 ‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

41.  And he said: Embark therein! In the name of Allah be its course and its mooring. Lo! My Lords is Forgiving, Merciful.
41.  Wa  qaalar-kabuu  fiihaa  BisMillaahi  maj-rai-haa  wa  mursaa-haa.  ‘Inna  Rabbii  la-Gafuurur-Rahiim.

Commentary

Maj-raa – (to run, to move, to flow), origin of this word is J-R-Y. Meaning of the words jar-yun and maj-raa is the same. In Holy Qur’an, this word is written as “Maj-rii-haa”, but it should be read as “ Maj-raa-haa. However, grammatically it should be recited as “Maj-rai-haa”.

Mursaa – (to moor), its origin is ‘irsaa-‘un, which has been derived from the word ras-wun. Ras-wun means “to fix firmly, to confine a vessel by cables and anchors”.

Actual Supporter of the Believers is Allah Almighty. They see unto Him at the time of doing every work. If, for acquiring the object, they collect apparent means, then it is not with the intention that they will gain their end, but the reason of gathering those means is that Allah Almighty has commanded them to do so, that they should try to get everything according to the proper method, which He has fixed for them. Trying to collect the causes for acquiring own object is; in fact; a prayer, which we beseech from Allah Almighty. Summary of our entire effort is that we ask earnestly in the Court of Allah Almighty in these words: Our Lord! We obeyed Your Command. Bestow upon us that thing for which we prayed.

Prophet Noah (peace be upon him) completed building of the ship by the Command of Allah Almighty and addressed to those people who were required to cause to carry on the ship: Sit on the ship in the name of Allah. It will float on the water by His command and then moor. God Almighty will save us from drowning, Who has determined this ship a source of our protection. He is Merciful and Forgiving of our errors.

This method of Messenger Noah (peace be upon him) is a pattern for all of us that we should try to do our best, and then be hopeful of God’s Mercy and Bounty.

40.  (Thus it was) till, when Our commandment came to pass and the oven gushed forth water, We said: Load therein two of every kind, a pair (the male and female), and thy household, save him against whom the word hath gone forth already, and those who believe. And but a few were they who believed with him.
40. Hattaaa  ‘izaa  jaaa-‘a  ‘Am-ruNaa  wa  faarat-tan-nuuru,  qul-Nahmil  fiihaa  min-  kullin-  zaw-jay-nis-nayni  wa  ‘ah-laka  ‘illaa  man-  sabaqa  ‘alay-hil-Qawlu  wa  man  ‘aaman.  Wa  maaa  ‘aamana  ma-‘ahuuu  ‘illaa  qaliil.

Commentary

Faara – (gushed forth), it is past tense from the word fawara. Fawara means “to spring out with pressure”. The word fawaarah, which is used usually in Urdu language, has come out from the same, it means “a fountain”.

Tan-nuuru – (an oven), it is also called tandur. It remains hot due to fire, but at that time, water began to gush out from it.

Min-  kullin – (of every kind, from the entire animate beings), kullin means “every, all”. Here it aims “those pet animals which are helpful for the mankind in all forms.

Allah Almighty commands: When Our commandment came to pass, the clouds appeared, it began to rain. When it was raining, at the same time, the water began to gush out from the land everywhere also, even that the oven too gushed forth the water. We commanded Noah (peace be upon him): Load in the ship all those things which you wish to save from the water. From the useful animals, take one pair of each (the male and female). Carry with you the people of your house and those who have believed, save those against whom, it has been decided that they would be drowned.

Prophet Noah (peace be upon him) caused to sit all such people in the ship, along with one pair of all those animals which were required to be protected. The entire people of His (peace be upon him) family were carried on the ship along with all believers, save His son named Yam, who is famous with the name of Kan’aan and his mother name Waa’ilah. They did not ride on the ship and drowned along with other all disbelievers. The Believers were very less in numbers.

39.  Fa-sawfa  ta’-lamuuna,  many-ya’-tiihi  ‘Azaabuny-yukh-ziihi  wa  yahillu  ‘alayhi  ‘azaa-bum-muqiim.

Commentary

It is commanded that when Prophet Noah (peace be upon him) started building the ship, it was known to him by means of inspiration from Allah Almighty (in parts) that which should be its form and shape, how much compartments and storeys of it should be built, and how much should it be long and wide. He (peace be upon him) used to engage in this work from morning to evening daily, because it was commandment from Allah Almighty.

Every time when chieftains of His (peace be upon him) folk used to pass and see that He (Noah - peace be upon him) was connecting the wooden planks with one another, they used to make mock of Him and say jeeringly: Wow! What are you fabricating now; leaving all preaching and advice?

Messenger Noah (peace be upon him) used to say: I have been building a floating house. Hearing this; they used to laugh at Him (peace be upon him), say and pass: What is exigency of a floating house at a dry place?

Noah (peace be upon him) used to say: Do you laugh? We have been looking death standing over your heads. We laugh also on your carelessness and ignorance that “every human being tries to collect provisions for hundreds of years but nobody knows that what will happen in the next moment”. O.K. Laugh as much as you can. You will be known very soon that “whether we shall suffer or you, whether you meet your doom for ever or we”.

36.  And it was inspired in Noah, (saying): No-one of thy folk will believe save those who have believed already; so be not distressed because of what they do.

Commentary

It is commanded that it was inspired in Noah (peace be upon him): From your nation, those who had to believe, have believed. Now no more people will believe. Their evil deeds have caused to merit them of a severe punishment. Therefore, being distressed for their wrong doings is useless. A heavy storm of water is near to come very soon. These people will be drowned and die in it. You should be worried about the safety of yourself and your believers, and start building a magnificent ship. We shall protect and watch over your work, and teach you the technique of building the ship by means of Inspiration and Revelation. You should give up thinking about the ignorant and astray people. Coming of the storm is eternal and dying by drowning of all disbelievers is certain. Now you should not recommend anyone of the wrongdoers. They are not able to be forgiven now.

When the time of appearance of the intention of Allah Almighty reaches, then the Messengers (peace be upon them) are informed timely that they should arrange for safety precautions to escape from the wrath of Allah Almighty. Therefore, it was commanded to Noah (peace be upon him) that he should begin fabricating a big ship. Allah Almighty would guide him through inspiration that “How and which type of ship is required to be fabricated?”

Commentary

At first, Messenger Noah (peace be upon him) said: Bringing the wrath or otherwise is in the power of Allah Almighty. He will send if He will. But when it will come, then full misfortune will come upon you. No part of the world will be able to provide you protection. It has been known from your insistence and arrogance that you would never come unto the Right Path. These signs have been showing clearly that if intention of Allah Almighty is to keep you astray, then advising to you by Me (peace be upon him) is useless.

Every individual is helpless before the intention of Allah Almighty. He is your Lord and you all will be brought back unto Him. Which circumstances of the folk of Noah (peace be upon him) have been described in Holy Qur’an, the same condition was of the people of Makkah. They also used to evade from admitting the teachings of Islam in the same way. When last Messenger of Allah Almighty, Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) caused to hear them the circumstances of Noah (peace be upon him); they began to cry in these words: After hearing our answers, you have forged and included it in Qur’an.

About it, in the next verse, it has been commanded: Say to them! You should understand the fact that disobedience of Allah Almighty and opposing Him is not good for you. If I have forged it, then I am responsible of wrongdoing committed by Me (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him), but which you continue holding out falsely for putting off the Truth, it is a great and unforgivable crime. I am clear of (all) that you commit.
