Commentary
Story of Prophet Joseph (peace be upon him) was asked because the Jews exited them for it. Messenger of Allah Almighty, Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) caused to hear this story with so much eloquence and in a good language that the hearers were astonished. Moreover, some such matters were also explained which were even neither known to the Jews and nor those did exist in their Holy Book.
It is commanded: You (O Muhammad!) were not aware of these all circumstances in respect of the life of Joseph (peace be upon him). We manifested them upon you by means of inspiration from the Unseen Screen. When his (Joseph’s) brothers were thinking for a plan against him (peace be upon him) and were desirous to behave deceitfully, at that time, You were not present there. You told the story which We (God Almighty) taught You (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him). Then, what is their hesitation in having belief in this Word (Qur’aan) revealed by Us? It is also a token of Messenger-hood that You have been causing them to hear unhesitatingly correct historical incidents, whereas You are Uneducated. Secondly, You do not ask them any fee for these information.
