Reward of Virtue
Surah ‘Al-‘An-‘aam (Cattle) – Chapter –
6)
‘A-‘uu-zu
Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)
Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

مَن جَآءَ بِٱلْحَسَنَةِ فَلَهُۥ عَشْرُ أَمْثَالِهَاوَمَن جَآءَ بِٱلسَّيِّئَةِ فَلَا يُجْزَىٰٓ إِلَّا مِثْلَهَا وَهُمْ لَا يُظْلَمُونَ 160
قُلْ إِنَّنِى هَدَىٰنِى رَبِّىٓ إِلَىٰ صِرَٰطٍ مُّسْتَقِيمٍ دِينًا قِيَمًا مِّلَّةَ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ حَنِيفًا وَمَاكَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ 161
160.
Whoso bringeth a good deed will receive tenfold the like thereof, while whoso
bringeth an ill-deed will be awarded but the like thereof; and they will not
be wronged.
161.
Say: Lo! As for me, my Lord hath guided me unto a Straight Path, a Right
Religion, the Faith of Abraham, the upright, who was no idolater.

Man jaaa-‘a bil-hasanati falahuu ‘ashru
‘amsaalihaa. Wa man- jaaa-‘a bis-sayyi-‘ati
falaa yuj-zaaa ‘illaa mislahaa wa hum
laa yuzlamuun.
161.
Qul ‘innanii hadaanii Rabbiii ‘ilaa
Siraatim-Mus-taqiim. Diinan- Qiya-mam-Millata
‘Ibraahiima haniifaa. Wa maa kaana
minal-mushrikiin.

Commentary
Diinun – (the Religion, the
Path to go on, better way of doing), if this path is written in the form of a
law, it will be called Millat. And it is the Divine Law of the
Religion too.
Qiya-mun – (straight,
right, strong, prescribed). It is an adjective. Actual word is qawmun.
According to the Arabic grammar, “’aw” has been changed with “iya”.
Its substance is “Q-aw-m”, which means “standing”. The words qayam
(standing erect, stability, abode etc.), qayem (standing,
perpendicular, stagnant, firm, constant etc.), qayyam, mustaqiim,
qawaam, maqaam etc. have also been derived from the same origin, and
the meanings like “strength, durability, ratification, support, confirmation
and support” etc. exist into all of these words. Qayyam, Qaem and Mustaqiim
have the same meanings; however, exaggeration in the word qayyam is
more than others.
Haniifun – (the upright), the
individual, who turns his face from all, is called Haniif. Its adjective
is hanaf, which means “to turn towards, to bow”. We have discussed
this word already in Surah ‘Aali-‘Imraan”.
Common code regarding provision of rewards against good works has been
described in this verse. Foundation of the law depends on that general mercy
which has passed in the second Section of this Chapter (Surah) – Kataba ‘alaa Nafsi-hir-Rahmah {He (Allah Almighty) hath prescribed
for Himself Mercy}. It was demand of
that Mercy that the human being should do good works and he should be given
rewards. But he will do good works thence, when he will control his caprice and
bestial desires.
Therefore, besides the retaliation of good works, he will also be
rewarded separately for pressing his desires, for which he has to work hard.
That; extra reward of retaliation will be at least tenfold the like thereof
every goodness, while punishment against any ill-deed will be only the like
thereof. No extra punishment will be awarded along with it against an ill-deed,
because he has not done any extra labor along with a sin, for which he should
be punished. It is clear that doubt of tyranny can never be in it.
Further
it is commanded: O Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him)!
Say to them! My Lord has shown Me quite Straight Path, and this entirely
Straight Path is that strong and appointed Religion, Rules of which has been
based by Abraham (peace be upon Him). He (peace be upon Him) had pure Belief
and intention. He (peace be upon Him) had no other wish but to seek the Will of
Allah Almighty. And while the heart of anyone does not have slavery of
selfishness or desires, he cannot be an idolater. So, Abraham (peace be upon
Him) was never from the idolaters. Worship of idols and selfishness, which was
customary in the Arab territory during those days, can never be the part of
Abraham’s Religion (peace be upon Him).
