that which they used to mock surrounded them.

Commentary
Sayyi-‘aatu –
(Evils), this word is plural of sayyi-‘atun, which has been derived
from saw-‘un. Saw-‘un means “to trouble, to
molest”. Sayyi-‘atun means evil but it aims “bad consequence”.
Haaqa –
(surrounded), it is past tense from the word heeq. Heeq means
“to surround, to blockade, to encircle”. Haaqa bihim –
surrounded them.
To the people of Makkah,
and by means of them; to the human beings of the entire world, it is being
caused to understand in this verse that; because ancient nations disobeyed
their Messengers (peace be upon them), so they spoiled their work in the world;
and at last; their obstinacy and refractoriness bloomed. The Divine Law
accomplished Its work and they had to bear the result of their deeds. Allah
Almighty had already caused to know them that they should behold that “the
result of evil deed is bad”. But they did not care. They used to mock the
advice of Messengers (peace be upon them) and considered that the doom was only
a menace. They were arrogant on their power and said: There is no one who may
trouble us. Pleasures and comfort of the world are not written in your luck.
See! How much precious things have been spreading all around and you are
deprived of them.
Alas! At last the same doom
surrounded them; of which they used to mock.
