‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in Allaah from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

84.  And never (O Muhammad) pray for one of them who dieth, nor stand by his grave. Lo! they disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger, and they died while they were evildoers.
84.  Wa  laa  tusalli  ‘alaaa  ‘aha-dim-minhum-maata  ‘abadanw-wa  laa  taqum  ‘alaa qabrih.  ‘Inna-hum  kafaruu  Billaahi  wa  Rasuu-liHii  wa  maatuu  wa  hum  faasi-quun.

Commentary

It is commanded that you should keep only necessary friendly intercourse with the mischievous, wicked and hypocrites, so that they may know clearly that, according to the community’s view, their behavior is extremely objectionable, and they should correct their acts by feeling their errors. If someone of them dies, then O Messenger (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam)! You should never cause to say funereal prayer for him and nor should you stand by his grave, because doing so, some inclination towards them becomes manifest.

The Muslims, as a community, should practice some unkindness with them. Therefore their religious leader should not cause to say funeral prayer for any such person, about whom he knows that he did not care for the Law conformable to Shara’. His relatives can bury him after causing to say his funeral prayer at their own.

Main reason of it is that those people used to deny Allah Almighty and His Messenger (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) openly and fearlessly, and in the condition of disobedience, they died. They could not repent. The community should have no connection with such people.

It has passed earlier that Abdullah bin Obayy had died before revelation of this verse and the Messenger (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) caused to say his funeral prayer; keeping common human sympathy in view, as well as bestowed His (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) shirt also for his shroud, and at the time of his burial, prayed for him too.

But when this verse was revealed then neither He (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) participated in the funeral ceremony of any hypocrite and nor in his shrouding. The names of the hypocrites were told by the Messenger (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) to Huzayfah (May Allah be pleased with him). So Umar (May Allah be pleased with him) used to observe participation of Huzayfah (May Allah be pleased with him) in the funeral ceremony of any person that if he {Huzayfah (May Allah be pleased with him)} is present there then He {Umar (May Allah be pleased with him)} used to participate, otherwise no.

Nowadays this matter has become complicated that how the vagabonds and immoral people should be straightened. For this purpose, making laws and ordinary instructions for being careful from such people is useless. Its treatment is that; which can be understood from this verse. That is to say; public which abide by the law, should break off all social connections from them, so that being helpless through boycott, they may be compelled to correct themselves or be ruined by fighting. There is no other treatment more useful than shutting out social and commercial intercourse. Nowadays, friendly intercourse is kept up equally with the vicious people, so their strength has been increasing.
