Who beguiles someone, beguiles not but himself

Who beguiles someone, beguiles not but himself

Surah ‘Al-‘Baqarah (The Cow) – Chapter – 2)
Stage – 1, Verses – 9 & 10 of 286, Section – 2 of 40 (Part - 1)

BisMIllaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

They think to beguile Allah and
those who believe, and they beguile none save themselves; but they perceive not.
Yukhaadi-‘uunAllaaha  wal-laziina   ‘aamanuu.  Wa maa yakhda-‘uuna  ‘illaaa  ‘anfusa-hum  wa  maa  yash-‘uruun.

Lesson

Yukhaadi-‘uuna - (They deceive, beguile). It means “Hiding evil thought in the heart and showing oneself a good friend, so that the other person may be deceived, and keeping him in delusion.

‘Anfusa-hum (Their bodies, spirits, souls)

Wa maa yash-‘uruun. (They do not perceive). This word is built from Sha’uur, according to Arabic language; it means “to understand, to guess”. Here it aims internal perception. The Intention is that they have fallen in self-delusion. But they do not know their folly.

In the last lesson, it was told about the Hypocrites that: whatever they say with their tongues, their hearts do not accept, and what they keep in their hearts, they do not say that with their tongue. They say themselves ‘Muslim’ for obtaining favor and benefit from the Muslims or to escape themselves from their hold. In addition, some more detail about their act of hypocrisy has been enlightened in this lesson. They are committed in the crimes of deception and cheating besides the infidelity. Opposing the Truth, their courage has increased so much that; according to their thoughts, they have been deceiving God Almighty too. During the period of Last Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon Him), they used to join and attend the conferences of Muslim and consultations, reinstate their confidence with Muslims and keep conspiracy also with the infidels secretly, telling them the matters of Muslims and in the form of friends, used to stab in the backs of the Believers.

This evil act of Hypocrites is censurable particularly because they try to deceive the Believers. Keeping someone in delusion and misleading others is their religion. Not only the Believers, but have they thought that they will succeed to deceive God Almighty also. How much they are senseless, that a creature thinks to deceive his Creator. So Allah Almighty says in His Holy Word, Al-Qur’aan: They are ignorant, do not perceive and have not decency of the Truth. They suppose that ignorance is intelligence and wisdom is folly.

In their hearts is a disease, and Allah Increaseth their disease. A painful doom is theirs because they lie.
Fii quluubihim-marazun, fazaada-humUllaahu marazaa Wa lahum    ‘azaabun ‘aliimum, bimaa kaanu yakzibuun.

Lesson

Marazun – Disease. There are two kinds of diseases, physical and spiritual. The fault, defect or pain in the body is produced by the bodily disease. Spiritual disease enrages the manners, and the spirit gets ailment. Here it is the talk about spiritual diseases of infidelity and hypocrisy which stop the human being from doing good deeds and arranging for the next life (after death). Here meanings of diseases are ailments of the spirit which prevents to achieve the excellence, for instance; ignorance, jealousy, ill-will, love of property & wealth and telling a lie etc.

Fa – (So) this particle indicates toward the talk about consequence and fruit of above mentioned diseases.

Zaada – (Increased) it means: God increased their jealousy giving more victories and promotions to the Messenger (peace be upon Him) and the Muslims. The disease of enmity with Islam and jealousy with Muslims increased more in their hearts.

‘Azaabun ‘aliim – (a Painful Doom/agony), they will be punished with a painful agony on the Doomsday.

Yakzibuun – (They tell a lie).

In this verse, the manners of Hypocrites are being enlightened with more detail. They have ailment of infidelity and hypocrisy in their hearts which they have grown themselves. As the Muslims get promotions and victories, jealousy and ill-will increases in their hearts.

Fazaada-humullaahu marazaa - (so Allah Increaseth their disease). It doesn’t mean that God Almighty has increased their infidelity and hypocrisy Himself, but it aims that due to the result of their infidelity and hypocrisy, Allah Almighty has increased their ailment. Due to such manner, the circumstances so changed, from which they took increase in their disease. Otherwise, If they had used their sense correctly, they had found the guidance from the same circumstances. As result of disease lessens the physical strength, just like this, the result of spiritual disease will be in the form of a Painful Agony on the Doomsday.
